I had just finished the Hobbit and was thrilled to hear there was a whole new chapter to the world of Middle Earth. From start to finish I was hooked. J.R.R. Tolkien created a story that beautifully demonstrates the power of friendship. For me, the strongest aspect of the trilogy is the cast of characters and the incredible journey they go on both physically and emotionally. With his detailed writing style you can't help but feel that you're right alongside these characters experiencing events with them. You're happy when they're happy and you feel the heart-break when they do. Most of my classmates had never heard of Margaret, let alone read her books, which hit the "I want to feel special" button right on the nose. From high school on, I moved 4 more times (not counting apartment changes within cities), and began buying a copy of Surfacing in a second hand store, where ever I went. I'm at 7 copies now, including two of the same edition. I do tend to re-read the book with each new purchase and write in it all the same. I had no idea at the time that it was called book of the year by Time Magazine in 2012 or that it would ultimately have a significant impact on my life. Of course, my brother loved it and insisted that I read it immediately. It re-awakened my interest in YA literature (a genre I didn’t actually read as a young adult, but became interested in while pursuing my BA in English.) The book is a reminder of how grown up young people can be, and captures both the optimism and the angst that teens feel when confronting heartbreak and mortality for the first time. This book was in the back of my mind constantly while I completed my B.Ed in preparation to be a high school English teacher. My brother gave it back to me when he moved halfway across the country for work, so having it on my bookshelf and being able to sift through its pages whenever I want is wonderful. It’s considered the Bible of progressive urban planners and I bought it for the first urban planning class I ever took. I devoured it before the class commenced and found that it provided me with a wealth of new vocabulary with which to articulate the wondrous complexity and vibrancy of urban life. The book played a pivotal role in my decision to commit to pursuing a career as an urban planner, and I am proud say that I have achieved this goal.   What resonated most for me was Jacobs’ “Four Prerequisites for Vibrancy”: a simple schema for evaluating a place’s potential for conviviality. The four prerequisites, in no particular order, are: short city blocks; a variety of building age; a minimum of two primary land uses; and sufficient people to support the primary land uses. He showed me that a story isn't just a list of events but can be a scenic, meandering, endlessly tangential tour of the author's own personality. The Dirk Gently series of NEARLY three books seems, to me at least, to be made out of left over parts of Adams. Some Doctor Who that never quite made it to the TV, some Thor stories he wasn't ready to let go from Hitchhikers, and a yearning to get his style over top of a noir story like an ill-fitting (yet still oddly becoming) suit. It's not his most perfect work, but it is him having fun in a way only he can manage. I write now aspiring to amuse myself as much as those who may one day read what madness I've spilled forth. It's a game that aimed to bridge old-school dungeon crawler games with modern mechanics, and, reading it, I feel it was quite successful. It's one of my favourite books right now because it inspires me. Almost every page in it sparked an idea. I haven't felt so overwhelmed with creativity in ages. It has been a phenomenal story springboard for me and I'm actively channeling it into writing fiction and planning game worlds. The High Window (Raymond Chandler): American Noir detective fiction from the 30s and 40s is probably my favourite fiction genre. Raymond Chandler is one of the top names in it and wrote a series around a private detective named Philip Marlowe. The High Window is the third book in the series and is one of my favourites because it's one where you actually learn a lot about what it is that motivates Marlowe to lead the life he does, but also what cripples him from participating in a "normal" life. It's particularly fun because he never actually TELLS you anything, the reader is actively puzzling it out based on Marlowe's actions, many of which he simply does but refuses to justify or explain, even to himself (it is a first person narration). I love books that are also puzzles. The Plague (Albert Camus): I have not actually read this book yet. I started it the morning this photo was taken. And it is that, the newness and mystery of this book, that qualifies it as a favourite. There's very little I love more than a mystery bound between two covers. Make Room! Make Room! (Harry Harrison): Make Room! Make Room! is a dystopian thought experiment on overpopulation written in the 1970s with an underlying argument in favour of birth control and sex education. The first time I read this book I was completely awed by it. It is everything I have ever wanted to write. It's bleak and hopeless, and the characters are pathetic and sad but hopeful and proactive, and in the end life is just this indifferent juggernaut that steamrolls everything and reminds the reader of both the resilience of the individual, their adaptability, and the complete meaninglessness of anything they could possibly do. Catch 22 (Joseph Heller): One of the most absurd and disturbing books I've ever read. It's about some fighter pilots stationed in Italy during WWII who are all steadily being driven insane by the absurdity of the war and the army. It very steadily pushes from hilarious to horrifying, to the point where, by the time I hit the 2/3 mark and the story really starts going to hell, I would often have to put the book down just to keep from throwing up. It is one of the most wholly original and fascinating fantasy worlds I have ever encountered (external souls in the form of shape shifting animal familiars! armored bear father figures! angels made of pure consciousness! millions of worlds existing in the same space, only separated by a veil that can be cut by a magical knife!), but for all its fantasy the resonance of this story lies firmly in its exploration of the nature of our existence as human beings. Pullman marries heavy philosophical concepts with one of the best fantasy adventures stories ever written. As a strong believer in ongoing self-development, examination, awareness, and evolution, this book resonated with me in ways I still can’t fully articulate. Her diary, a repurposed Proust book, floating in a Hello Kitty lunch box across the Pacific Ocean, is picked up by Ruth, also of Japanese American ancestry, now living on a small island off the British Columbia coast. There is a discussion of the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre drift, a mysterious raven figure, magical realism in which words vanish from the diary pages (not dissimilar to files erased on a PC), a French Maid Café in Tokyo – this in not Alan Kerr’s Lost in Japan, a 104 year old Zen Buddhist nun great grandmother, Jiko, with a World War II connection and Ruth’s own bending of time and geography. I found inspiration in the characters' struggles against overwhelming odds and the fact that, though their experiences may have changed all of them - that no one was unaffected by their trials, they were able to succeed in the end. The Two Towers stands out for me as both the first book in the series I read (it's a long story, but there are reasons) and the one which I find contains some of the most wonderful imagery and hope in spite of its bleak war-torn backdrop. I took it with me on an extended hiking trip last year and used the instructions it gave to catch a fish using the materials at hand!
